Carleton and SMU advance to championshp game with OT wins
WOLFVILLE, NS - Under the fog created by high humidity, the Axemen fell short in an overtime shootout, falling 6-5 to the visiting Carleton Ravens in game two of the Don G. Wells Memorial hockey tournament.
With 110 minutes of assessed penalty minutes and a lead that changed 3 times, the Carleton Ravens forced the game into overtime with a goal scored Ryan Bedard with 0.9 seconds remaining on the score clock.
The Ravens opened the night with an even handed goal 10 minutes into the game. Second year defenseman Travis Gibbons tied the game with 11 seconds remaining in the first period.
Outshooting Carleton 9-8 after one period, the Axemen opened the lead to one with a powerplay goal at 11:07 in the second period on a goal scored by first year sniper Brett Thompson.
Carleton's Joe Pleckaitis, how scored two goals for the Ravens, netted his first with seven minutes remaining in the second to tie the game at two. Less than a minute later, Raven Tim Billingsley gave back Carleton their lead, to close out the second frame with a 3-2 lead.
The Axemen, who outshot Carleton 17-10 in the third, pulled out to a 4-3 lead off of two goals, the first at 12:50 by second year forward Liam Heelis. Thompson added his second goal of the night to give Acadia lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the second third period.
Pleckaitis tied the game at four on his second goal of the night, but former Moosehead Travis Randell kept the Axemen ahead with a late third period goal.
Bedard's goal with less than one second remaining, forced the game into overtime and eventually into a shoot-out with Raven Jeff Hayes netting the eventual shootout winner.
The Axemen will play at 6pm tomorrow evening against the game #1 loser StFX, while the Saint Mary's Huskies will try to keep the Herbin Don Wells tournament trophy home in Nova Scotia with a win over the Carleton Ravens at 1pm.
Saint Mary's grabs OT win over StFX
WOLFVILLE, NS - The Don G. Wells tournament kicked off with an ovetime win for the Saint Mary's Huskies in the first of two games scheduled for Saturday.
Scoreless after one period, the StFX X-Men struck first with 28 seconds remaining in the second period on a powerplay. Senior defenseman Spencer McAvoy scored on the man advantage to give the X-men a 1-0 lead heading into the dressing room after two periods.
With Saint Mary's outshooting the X-men 23-15 after two periods, it wasnt until 11:19 of the final frame, second year Huskie Jeff Marchand tied the game at one.
With a 31-27 shots on net advantage after three periods, the game headed into extended time with a 4-on-4 overtime format. The first shot that landed on net only 47 second into the extra time ended the game on a Chirs MacKinnon goal for the Huskies.
Saint Mary's will head on to play the winners of tonight's game as Carleton takes on the host Acadia at 7:00pm.
