Axemen cap weekend with 5-0 win over visiting UQTR
WOLFVILLE, N.S. - A weekend of exhibition hockey wrapped up with a 5-0 win by the Axemen over the visiting UQTR Patriots. The game was the second of two preseason games slatted for this weekend. Last night the Axemen defeated the Queen's Golden Gaels 5-2 and today's win was a performance that head coach Darren Burns was happy with.
"Today's game was the best game by far in exhibition play. We had a good commitment to defense and was a much better played game than last nights", pointed out Burns.
Out-shooting the Patriots 26-15, Acadia's third period out-burst of goals solidified the win after two goals by the Axemen in the second period were unanswered.
Jonathan Laberge's third goal of the weekend came five minutes into the second period as the Axemen played shorthanded. Just over three minutes later, rookie forward Mike Cazzola scored to give the Axemen a 2-0 lead after two.
Cullen Morin opened the third period with a powerplay goal, only 12 seconds into final frame to give Acadia a 3-0 lead. Out-shooting UQTR 10-4 in the third, Acadia opened the gap with two more goals. The first was by former Halifax Moosehead Travis Randell, his second of the weekend and Wolfville native KC Brown hammered the final nail in the coffin with a goal at 12:17.
The Axemen capitalized on one of four powerplay opportunities.
Acadia will head to the US to play two games next weekend, but opening first in Moncton on Wednesday night before heading south of the border to take on RPI and Quinnipiac before returning on Sunday.
